Accessing and managing your Old Age Security (OAS) benefit correctly is essential to avoid payment delays, missed updates, or interruptions.
This article explains how to check your OAS information, update personal details, and maintain your eligibility — all through the My Service Canada Account (MSCA).
How to access and navigate My Service Canada Account (MSCA)
To check your OAS status or manage your benefit, the most efficient method is through your My Service Canada Account (MSCA). Once signed in, go to the “Old Age Security” section and select “Manage my benefits.”
👉 From your dashboard, you can:
- Track your application status
- View payment history
- Report changes in personal information
- Upload supporting documents
- Manage communication preferences and tax slip options
How to check your eligibility status, payment schedule and benefit history
Inside MSCA, navigate to:
- “Follow up item(s)” and “Notifications” to track your application progress and any required actions.
- “Payments” > “All payments” to view your benefit history since March 17, 2025. For earlier records, you’ll need to contact Service Canada directly.
📢 You can also download official tax slips (T4A(OAS)/NR4-OAS) under the “Tax slips” section, useful for your annual income tax return.
What to do if your payment is delayed or missing
If you don’t receive your OAS payment on the scheduled date, follow these steps:
- Sign in to MSCA and check your “Payments” section to confirm issuance.
- Verify your address and banking information are correct.
- Contact Service Canada if the issue persists.
⚠️ Important: Keep in mind that banking changes currently cannot be made directly in MSCA, so you’ll need to submit a request through mail or in person.
Required annual income declarations (especially for GIS recipients)
If you receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), you must file your annual income tax return by April 30 to continue receiving payments without interruption. If you didn’t file with CRA or your income changed recently, update this information manually in MSCA under “Manage my income”.
🚨 This step is critical, especially for low-income seniors, as GIS eligibility is reassessed every year based on your reported income.
Keeping your information updated
Failure to update your personal information may lead to benefit overpayments, suspensions or delays. Use MSCA to manage:
- Email and phone number: Update through the “Profile” section.
- Marital status: Use “Manage marital relationship” and upload supporting documents if required.
- Living arrangements: If you and your partner live apart for reasons beyond your control, update under “Manage living apart” — this could impact your GIS or Allowance amount.
- Authorized person: Add or remove individuals who can communicate on your behalf using “Manage my authorized person.”
- Voluntary tax deductions: Adjust these settings in “Manage voluntary income tax deductions.”
💡 Note: Changes to banking details and residential/mailing address must be made by contacting Service Canada directly, as these updates are not currently available in MSCA.
What happens if you move outside Canada
Your OAS payments may continue if you’ve lived in Canada for at least 20 years after turning 18. However, if you receive GIS or Allowance benefits, these stop after six consecutive months outside Canada, regardless of your previous residency duration.
🚩 If you move abroad, report the change immediately to avoid overpayments and ensure compliance with eligibility rules.
How to report errors or inconsistencies
If you notice incorrect benefit amounts, missing documents, or errors in your profile, you can:
- Upload relevant documents under the “Your document(s)” section in MSCA.
- Call Service Canada directly for clarification or formal correction.
- Use the “Follow up item(s)” section to see which actions are pending.
Timeline for benefit updates after changes are reported
Once you submit a change or document in MSCA, updates typically reflect within a few business days.
If documents are missing or require validation, you’ll receive a request via your notifications section or by mail. Keep checking your MSCA regularly for updates.
Avoiding suspension or termination of benefits
Common reasons for suspended OAS benefits include:
- Failing to file your income taxes
- Living outside Canada without notifying Service Canada
- Providing incomplete or outdated personal information
- Ignoring requests for additional documentation
✅ To avoid these issues, keep your MSCA information current and respond to all Service Canada correspondence promptly.

Requesting benefit reconsideration
If you disagree with a decision made about your OAS benefits, request a reconsideration through your MSCA dashboard. Select “If you disagree with a decision” and proceed to “Request for reconsideration.”
If you’re still not satisfied after the new decision, you may appeal to the Social Security Tribunal (SST). This is an independent body and the second step of the appeal process.
Managing your Old Age Security benefit doesn’t end once it’s approved. Regularly checking your MSCA, keeping your details updated, and reporting any changes promptly is key to avoiding delays, suspensions or payment errors. If you need help, reach out to Service Canada or visit your nearest office.
